"ID fraud is a really nasty crime - it can take ages to sort out the muddle a fraudster leaves and can make you feel vulnerable. The good news is that your credit history need not be impaired at all. The leading credit reference agencies all have consumer help departments you can contact with your problem. They will help sort out your credit report and work with you and the lenders affected to clear any accounts that were opened fraudulently."

James Jones is consumer education manager at Experian, a UK credit reference agency. He’s a spokesperson on consumer issues and runs Experian's consumer education programme, which seeks to make credit reports and the credit-granting process easier to understand.
